“Even though I’m a planner when it comes to painting, there are still some images that push their way in and I end up with something completely different from what I originally had in mind. Say Less is a perfect example of this.
I really like this piece, partly because I allowed my work area surroundings to dictate what the background composition would be. Scrap pieces of paper just basically took the stage and I placed a kind of trust in what I was seeing and let it be…..and because I really love a bit of tromp l’oeil I allowed that to be part of the image and again played with that by incorporating the bar code and accentuating the paper strips.
Even the figure in this work was a huge evolution and became someone completely different from my original intention. So truthfully there was a bit of kicking and screaming on my behalf to let go of the reins a bit and just let things happen. But in the end I’m really good with it. ”
