Bio

My initial training as a cabinet-maker was steeped in the Arts and Crafts tradition and later the Bauhaus and Modernism.

It is easy to see the design influence in the way I work along with the heritage of modernist simplification of forms.

Although purely sculptural, I see my work remaining rooted in the vessel tradition, both in its materiality, construction and the spatial sense of the completed pieces.

My Geometric pieces were the initial transition from sculptural but functional containers and vessels, which were often architecturally inspired. Moving away from the functional aspect allowed a freedom to focus entirely on the interaction of the forms themselves.

A Residency in Australia gave me to space to explore ideas that had been sitting quietly on a studio shelf for several years. These were small direct carvings in soft firebrick and I had intended to use these as maquettes for full-sized pieces. It needed a whole new approach from my geometric construction techniques but allowed an expanded vocabulary to open up.

In a sense, my assembled pieces bring all these ideas and techniques together. I use slabs firmed up in moulds that come from carvings, and combine these with elements that could be from a whole variety of making techniques.

Much earlier assembled forms – Obelisks and Stelae, though primarily architectural, had remarkable figurative aspects, even character suggestions giving rise to names.

The assembled pieces have some of the same figurative qualities whether it is totemic associations or subtle suggestive references to other cultures, African, Cycladic or Inuit Inukshuks.
