What an Idea!

Bio
If you’re familiar with Gaston Bachelard, a French philosopher, it’s quite likely you’re acquainted with his take on the centrality of home. Our house, he says, is our corner of the world. Our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word. Our resting place. Shelter. He takes it a step farther, suggesting that the house shelters daydreaming, protects the dreamer and allows one to dream in peace. Ah…the ideal home!
In terms of my art practice, I’ve gotta say I’m there with him. My characters might be involved in any number of dramas, conflicts and complications but they’re always housed. Situated in an enclosed space. A room. Stage. And I feel better about them as a result. As if I can now relax, knowing they’re safe.
It’s the narrative that draws me in. Story-telling. The kinds of things that take place in rooms. Think of all the stories that have taken place in your rooms. In all the rooms and houses you’ve ever lived in. Think of all the memories that have accumulated over the years. Lots of material there. And somehow it’s meaningful to bring a little of that to the surface.
I’ve worked with various media over the years, collage being the most recent. Lately I’ve been playing around with some text and doing some sketching.
