Sébastien Gaudette
Bio
Sébastien Gaudette is a Canadian artist based in Montreal. After is B.A. in visual arts and media
at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), he has dedicated himself to in-depth research
around the medium of paper, exploring the material through drawing, sculptures and installation.
Sébastien Gaudette’s artworks have been showcased in a variety of venues across Quebec,
including the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent, the
Centre national d’exposition in Jonquière, the Centre d’art actuel Langage Plus in Alma and the
Art-image exhibition center in Gatineau. He has also exhibited at the Cirque du Soleil and in
several cultural centers throughout the province. The artist has also participated in charity
events, such as auctions at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2021) and the
Laurentides auction (2023 and 2024).
Internationally, his work has exhibited at the renowned ArtHelix Gallery in Brooklyn, at the
Galerie Goutal in France and at the Martin Mertens Gallery in Germany. He has also been
featured in major art fairs, including Art Karlsruhe in Berlin, Art on Paper in Miami, the Seattle Art
Fair, the EXPO CHICAGO Art Fair, the Toronto Art Fair, and the Plural Fair in Montréal.
Gaudette has taken part in several research residencies in both Quebec and the United States,
experiences that have greatly enriched his creative practice.
In 2026, Sébastien Gaudette will present two major exhibitions in Canada, one in Ottawa and
the other in Edmonton.
The artistic practice of Sébastien Gaudette revolves around line and paper as a support; he
explores different perspectives through sculpture, installation, and drawing. His approach seeks
to create a graphic dialogue in which the gesture leaves only a trace: the fleeting imprint of a
movement, a sketch of an evolution toward more complex forms. This process leads him to
question the materiality of the support and the way we perceive things.
His sculptures and installations are distinguished by their imposing dimensions and forms
liberated from traditional conventions. The artist aims to transcend matter by evoking illusions of
lightness and movement. His work is based on constant experimentation with materials,
techniques, and tools, valuing both the rigor of fabrication and the spontaneity of creation.
While his installations are sometimes executed with great precision, his drawings thrive on
improvisation, leaving room for accident and the freedom of gesture in a form of instinctive
pictorial writing.
Although abstract, his works capture attention through fluid lines and bold contours, enhanced
by a vibrant color palette that evokes an almost palpable energy. His practice becomes a
sensory exploration, where matter transforms into a choreography of folds and curves,
continuously redefining the contours of a singular visual language.
