MAGIC AND OTHER UNRELATED THINGS
June 7- July 3
We are pleased to present our first solo exhibition with Edmonton artist Scott Cumberland at Sopa Fine Arts.
Cumberland charms us with lush textures and vivid colour palettes ...and dazzling paint ripples that seem to wave and twirl across his canvas. "I intend for the ribbons to be evocative rather than descriptive. While I see the ribbon as a metaphor, it is intended to apply to the viewer’s own personal experience rather than describe an external past experience of someone else," Cumberland explains. "For most of us, the way we experience time, energy and memory is not linear. I find the ribbon a rich subject because it stands as a metaphor for how I view time, thought, energy and memories. The ribbon is made up of many lines and though compromised of lines, the ribbon offers a different description. As life does, the ribbon bends in on itself, layers, doubles back and creates circular patterns."
With this body of work, Cumberland continues to incorporate bursts of colour and creates dynamic tension between the weaves, sometimes taking them to the edge of the canvas, while the central shapes almost seem to hover in open, concordant spaces. The expanding loops and modulations create moments of freedom and suspense; engaging the viewer to speculate how each pass was performed. Using homemade tools, Cumberland's paintings never fully reveal their secrets. The exhibition at Sopa features artwork from the past few years, taking us on a visual tour, showing how the artist continues to explore new ways to bend paint.
Please join us on opening night, Thursday June 7th from 7-9pm.
