We're pleased to announce Okanagan artist, Karla Doell’s solo debut at SOPA.
If we had to categorize or define this newest body of work from Karla Doell in Tagged, it could be called 'photographic montage' or 'compositing' as many in the industry refer to this type of collage. Using layers of graffiti she's unearthed in her travels, and her own photographic imagery, Doell digitally manipulates every piece until the composition becomes a harmonious balance of layers. She considers presentation an important element in her art, particularly in her photographic work. By using metal panels to provide a materiality; Doell successfully incorporates a slightly textured, matt finish that offers warmth and character. In this way, the artwork avoids the standard drawbacks that traditional photography under glass presents.
In Tagged, Doell uses her camera lens to expose snippets of visual poetry and weaves them into her mixed media tapestries. There’s a comfort in recognition and by using carefully chosen subjects and appealing colors, Doell allows the interaction between the contrasting layers to peak our interest. Strong architectural and landscape references may be paired with birds or graffiti or a speckle of unexpected color. It's a surprise how comfortable they all feel together. The expression beauty is in the eye of the beholder rings true when looking at a lonely tree, fully devoid of leaves, then tagged by random graffiti... but somehow Doell manages to overcome the grunge and helps us see the glorious, spontaneous beauty they both represent. Through her lens, a decayed wall or even an abandoned box car has an opportunity to be celebrated and worthy of space on our walls.
No matter if it’s a digital still life or a nature scene captured in just the right light... there's no question that Doell creates beautiful things.
TAGGED will be on view through March 1st, 2011.
