MICHELA SORRENTINO - statement

Michela Sorrentino - ArtistMICHELA SORRENTINO has always had an interest in patterns - in repetitive and recurring patterns - a kind of mark making. “Arranging marks and patterns in a way that puts them in a sort of ‘soft order’, feels right to me”. These marks are a part of
Sorrentino’s visual vocabulary.

Her environment is of course a constant source of inspiration. She is on the constant look out for tiny treasures to appear along her path in her every day. “I have small boxes full of seed pods, feathers, bleached bones. Collected over the years these artifacts become a catalyst for different projects and ideas”. There is a subtle narrative in Sorrentino’s work. Using the repetitive patterns, the odd word, graphic icons such as chairs, seed pods or sometimes faces, she weaves a story that is personal to everyone that takes the time to take a closer look. Sorrentino’s work implies a sense of natural history concealing and revealing with each layer of paint applied or scraped back. By using a number of techniques the painting reveals itself to her as she scours and scrapes the surface to create her marks. Sorrentino’s work is held in private and corporate collections locally and internationally.
